One of the most exciting aspects of where this little blog has taken me is all of the amazing people I have met over the years! The Saint Louis Fashion Week blogger getaway weekend (disclosure: my meals and transportation were provided by Alive Magazine for this weekend experience) was no exception!

BelleStyle Jewelry Showroom Saint LouisI was honored and excited to meet Heather from BelleStyle Boutique at her showroom to hear about the passion and care she puts into every piece of her gorgeous jewelry. This stuff is stunning! Her online shop gets a lot of national press and was recently featured in Redbook!

BelleStyle Showroom STLEvery corner of her showroom is packed with necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, charms and more!

Heather told us about how she started creating jewelry with the idea of making quality jewelry with a trendy flair. She’s all about angel wings and feathers but I was especially drawn to her new infinity collection. I ended up buying a mixed metals version.

BelleStyleInfinityBraceletHeather buys as much American-made pieces as possible and includes a lifetime repairs policy!

Religious Jewelry for all Occasions

We often see celebrities sporting religious jewelry on and off the red carpet. How can you capitalize on this trend of showcasing your religion without offending passerbys? Check out this great background and these helpful tips from Felicia!

Since the beginning of time, jewelry has played an important role in society. People have used jewelry as money, artwork and status and religious symbols. Today, metallurgists and artisans continue to shape precious metals and other natural items into hairpins, toe rings and anything in between. We are all used to thinking about wearing jewelry to add a bit of fashion into our everyday outfits, but jewelry’s history as a symbol of power or religious devotion should still be considered. Follow these tips on how, when and where to accessorize with religious jewelry and you’ll be set to showcase your beliefs in the best way possible.

How to Wear Religious Jewelry

Women wear heirloom pins to commemorate special occasions. A cross, Star of David, pentagram or Allah pendant associates one with the religion of his or her choice. These pieces are have sacred meanings and need to be approached with respect. Wearing religious jewelry without the proper care can cause accidental offense. If you are scantily clad it’s best not to wear items like cross necklaces or Stars of David. Additionally, adapting a burka or sari in a way that wasn’t intended could also become offensive quickly. It’s great to experiment with fashion, especially cross-cultural pieces. But when it comes to religious symbols – keep it traditional.

Where to Wear Religious Jewelry

Even if you wear a religious symbol as a fashion accent, someone might misconstrue your intentions and judge you based on what they see. Exercise sensitivity to your surroundings and to the people whom you meet by avoiding displaying religious jewelry during the following social situations.

  • On an job interview
  • While traveling in areas where openly displaying religions is not part of local customs
  • During jury duty or other judicial obligation
  • When meeting a significant other’s family
  • Consider your work environment before wearing jewelry into the office

When to Wear Religious Jewelry

Many families have traditions surrounding jewelry. It’s an American tradition to give your daughter her birthstone on her 16th birthday. Many southern families feel that a girl’s first diamond, no matter how small, should come from her father. Older family members can make a point of handing down family jewelry on special occasions such as births, graduations, engagements or especially exciting news. No one of these traditions are initially religious, but religious jewelry generally has an even deeper tie to its wearer. Families may hand down an heirloom rosary when a son or daughter is confirmed, the same could happen with a treasured veil pin or ohm pendant.

A little matchy matchy

While I’m a big believer in mixing and matching patterns and colors, sometimes I love putting something together that almost, but not quite matches. In this outfit the jacket is actually a denimish blue color that is just a few shades lighter than the blue of my actual denim. I was a little hesitant at first but I think it actually worked out.

How to: Store jewelry

I’ve been trying to come up with some good ideas on jewelry storage for a long time. Since I moved to college (ahem: too many years ago), I’ve been using one of those tiny little Rubbermaid drawer thingies. It worked out OK for a few years. That was before I had as much jewelry as I do now, before I had nice jewelry (I still don’t have much really nice jewelry) and before I had a lot of space that was actually mine.

I’ve been thinking recently about coming up with a new way to organize my jewelry, and I’m playing around with a few ideas.

Jewelry Furniture

Jewelry furniture can be a really great way to store jewelry for anyone with a creative hand.  Often people source from their local Goodwill and then spend an afternoon redoing it to make it great.

You can make this

Get a classic looking jewelry armoire

into this

Modern Jewelry Armoire Makover

Pros:

  • Make something your own
  • Lots of space for jewelry
  • Hidden out of sight

Cons:

  • Even when reusing things, this can get expensive once you pay for the furniture, paint and hardware
  • Takes up a lot of space in your room
  • Time/creativity required to redo the furniture

Bulletin Board Style Wall Storage

You may have seen different variations of this across the Internet. Some people use a basic bulletin board, often covered in fabric, and hang their jewelry from there. Something like this:

Other people have gotten more creative. This is actually the top of a table repurposed as a jewelry holder:

Pros:

  • Ability to easily create something to match your surrounding (as simple as adding fabric)
  • Fairly affordable
  • Easy access to your jewelry

Cons:

  • Difficult to hang a variety of items beyond just necklaces
  • Limited storage for girls with a lot of jewelry

Mannequins

For a girl with less jewelry than I have, the mannequin storage might work out. There are plenty of variations on this from heads to hands. Sort of related to this is the tree idea. Either way, the point here is that you hang your jewelry in a sort of artfully.

Pros:

  • Unique, artistic look

Cons:

  • Very little storage
  • Difficult to find mannequins to use

Drawer Organizers

Finally, there are the classic drawer organizers. This allows you to organize each piece nicely in felt-lined trays and then tuck them out of sight into the drawer.

These trays are a great option, but there are also some other stylish ideas I came across for drawer organizers. Check out these little teacups and saucers:

Stylish Jewelry Storage

Pros:

  • Lots of size options and space for lots of jewelry
  • Stylish, unique idea
  • Affordable (find mismatched cups at your local Goodwill)

Cons:

  • Lack of large necklace storage

Any other great options?

After looking at all of these, I’m sure I’m missing some great ideas. How do you organize your jewelry? I’m thinking of using a combination of wall storage and the teacup idea, but I’m definitely up for any other suggestions!

Help me pick my wedding necklace!

I finally found the perfect place for the style of necklaces I want: White House | Black Market!

Here are the few I’ve (sort of) narrowed it down to:

I’m really leaning toward the first one… These are the earrings I think I want:

Help me, please?

UPDATE: Thank you everyone for your input! I with with my instinct (and lots of recommendations) and got the first one!

DIY plans for the future: jewelry storage

I’ve been making lots of plans lately for DIY projects once I get settled in my new apartment. I’m already planning how to update an old coffee table, make some wall decor (ideas from HGTV) and even thinking of completely refinishing an old desk. But I also need to think in terms of functionality and solving some issues I’ve had in apartments past.

One thing that has always stumped me was how to store jewelry. Nearly all of my jewelry is costume (read: cheap) stuff but even so the little plastic rubbermaid it’s in now is not doing the job. Most of it is tangled and bunched up and it all needs a proper home.

Insert: Apartment Therapy. This great blog has everything from design inspiration, DIY projects and more. This great little idea for jewelry storage may be just what I need.

I’ll have to begin searching out the pieces I need. All of my DIY projects, including one soon on painting glass vases, will be blogged of course!
