Subtle Color Blocking: How to wear neons without looking like a highlighter

From Vogue spreads to the JC Penney catalogue, it would take a serious hermit to not know this season’s biggest trend is neon color blocking. The mixing and matching (or lack thereof) of neons colors is everywhere!

Have you dared to experiment with this trend yet?

I decided to venture into it in a color scheme that was very familiar to me. I always gravitate toward bold, jewel tones so I figured I would be best served by finding an item that could pair well with items I already owned.

I wasn’t necessarily looking for this skirt but when I was at Old Navy with a friend who was in search of a replacement pair of $2 beach sandals, I happened across it and couldn’t not snatch it up for only $12. My only regret is not trying it on as I quickly learned that Old Navy sizes tend to run a size or two too large. Oh well, my should-be natural waist skirt now skims my hips. Worse things have happened in this world.

Anyways…. so I snatched up this little piece and immediately new I just had to color block with it.

The heels I’ve had for a few years but often pass over. I bought them for a specific dress for a wedding and have probably only worn them a few times since. This was a great opportunity to dust them off and let them go for a walk.

The necklace should look super familiar as I wear it any chance I get. This may be the best $15ish ever spent at Charming Charlie.

Finally, I added a simple white tee to keep everything in balance. One of these days I may go out and buy the perfect top to bring the full color blocking to life with this skirt, but until then I wanted to tone it down a bit and make this a little more every day wearable. (AKA, I didn’t want to look like a highlighter.) There’s no better way to do this with neons than by adding neutrals. Try white, tan or black the next time you want to show off your new neons and you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to wear!

Have you tried neon color blocking yet? Were you successful or are you still tweaking your non-highlighter combos?

Spring is officially here!

Yep, that’s right! We’ve got sunny days and rainy weekends going on here in Cincy. The best thing about Spring is getting to bare your arms and legs a bit but still accessorize without sweating to death like you do in the Summer. Spring is probably my second favorite season (after Fall!).

Is it warming up where you are?

Pulling it all together

If you’ve read this site long, you know I’m a huge fan of keeping in simple. One statement piece and then support pieces around it. However, every once in awhile I like to mix statement pieces for a really noticeable outfit. Whether it’s mixing colors, patterns or accessories, pulling various statement pieces together into one outfit can take your outfit to a whole new level.

Keeping it simple

Some days you just need to go basic and add a few statement pieces. I started my outfit feeling pretty uninspired but once I added the boots and the necklace I felt much better about the outfit and actually really liked it by the end of the day!

A night on the town New Orleans

On our last night in New Orleans we finally got the chance to truly hit the town and hit the town we did. We checked out a great Italian restaurant in the garden district, stopped by a jazz club off of Magazine Street and then hit up some bars on Bourbon Street.

I wanted to wear something that could easily transition from dinner to drinks while still keeping it a bit conservative for my coworkers.
