Pantone’s 2012 Color of the Year

Sometimes I think back on college and really miss it… Don’t get me wrong – I love my job, adore having money to shop and don’t miss staying up all night for finals. What I do miss is school projects. I minored in Textile and Apparel Management and, as my husband would say, life was often ‘one big art project.’

My days were filled with sketching outfits, dreaming up ideas for new apparel stores and putting together mood boards.

I remember first learning about Pantone and their impact on the industry and I fell in love. That was way before Pantone sold gift items and the Gap featured a wall of Pantone-colored t-shirts.

The one thing that captivated me the most was how they get to decide the color of the year for the year to come. Yes, the entire industry looks to them for advice on what colors to infuse in clothes, accessories, household goods and more. Even stationary designers and wedding planners listen when Pantone speaks.

So I’m very excited to share with you the 2012 Pantone Color of the Year and I’m excited to see how designers incorporate this into color schemes moving forward. Without further ado…

Tangerine Tango

While reds and oranges aren’t exactly my cup of tea, I can see myself incorporating this into my wardrobe in little pieces. Maybe a skinny leather tangerine tango belt with a black skirt and crisp white top?

What about you? Do you think you’ll see this color in your wardrobe anytime soon?

Beauty Tip Tuesday: Reducing foot swelling and pain {and a giveaway!}

Update: the winner is…

In this edition of Beauty Tip Tuesday, we’re talking about foot pain. How many times have you picked out a killer pair of heels, worn them all night (I’m thinking dancing at a wedding reception) and had to take them off halfway through the night because your feet start to swell?

This actually happened to me a few weeks ago at a family wedding reception. Luckily I had packed a pair of flats, but let’s be honest. My flats looked lame with my killer dress compared to my 4 inch heels.

And then I was contacted by a company that claims they can help alleviate this swelling and allow you feet to heel quicker! Imagine: your feet start to swell and you rub some lotion on them and they quickly feel refreshed. That’s pretty much how it works!

Topricin claims their products are “safe, effective, patented homeopathic pain relief and healing creams that contain a combination of natural biomedicines. These medicines relieve pain by stimulating a robust healing response and assist the body’s desire to heal the damage that is causing the pain in joints, nerves and muscles.”

I tried out their Foot Therapy Cream after I spent a workday in heels and then went straight to the gym. Typically, by the time I come home and take off my tennis shoes, my feet are beat. I decided to rub on some of the foot cream and see what happened. I would compare the consistency to many heel-only lotions I’ve used. It’s not as thick as many moisturizing lotions, but it’s a silky texture that soaks in quickly. I actually did feel like my feet were quite rested within about ten minutes of using the cream.

If you’re someone who wears heels all day in a city or stands on your feet all day, I would highly recommend the Foot Therapy Cream.

Looking for other ways to reduce your foot pain from heels? Here are a few Beauty Tip Tuesday tips:

  • Consider high heeled shoes with an “air bag” or very comfortable sole that protects your feet from rubbing and provides shock absorption.
  • Choose to try on shoes at the end of your day, as they swell throughout the day when you stand and walk around.
  • Try on both pairs of shoes, as your feet may not be identical in size and the shoes may not be identical in size as well.
  • Limit your walking and standing when wearing high heels.
  • Stretch tight shoes with shoe stretchers to make them more comfortable.
  • Avoid running in high heels.
  • Massage your legs and feet after wearing high heels.

Topricin also has a few other products for other areas of the body, including knees, elbows and backs. They’ve graciously offered to supply one reader with each of their products!

Nail polish has developed by leaps and bounds this summer. OPI has released the shatter collection, which creates a “shattered” look on your nails on top of a vibrant color of your choice. Sally Hansen has come out with easy to apply nail polish strips in many different patterns that you simply peel and apply to your fingertips. Essie has taken the fashion world by storm by releasing some brilliant shades of color including inventive names such as smooth sailing, meet me at sunset, and the list goes on and on.
With all of these recent nail polish inventions comes experimentation, and there is plenty of nail products to go around. Depending on your outfit, you can color coordinate or choose a neutral color. Your pink maxi dress might go perfectly with a new shade of Essie nail polish. Or your little black dress would look daring with OPI’s shatter collection over some glittery purple nail polish. Or, if you are headed to the beach and you are worried about your nail polish coming off, try applying Sally Hansen’s easy to apply nail polish strips. Need some inspiration? Below are some fabulous summer dresses, paired with some out of this world nail polish that you won’t want to miss out on. Plus, stay tuned for some bargains on these gorgeous dresses as well.

Instead of making the time you can’t spare to paint your nails, simply apply this sticker like nail polish to your finger nails and you are all set to go. Sally Hansen also offers a variety of other colors and patterns if you care to switch up your polish strips at a later time.
AGB Women’s Sleeveless Dress // OPI Katy Perry Black Shatter 5 Piece

A little black dress is not only eye catching; it can instantly take on glitz and glamour with a shattering nail polish such as OPI’s new polish creations. A few of their new lines include Pirates of the Caribbean, Katy Perry, and Burlesque. Once you have the black shatter nail polish, simply put one coat without dipping your brush into the bottle a second time and paint it over your first layer of colored nail polish. Your black dress will be instantly transformed by some edgy and extremely stylish shattered polish.

The summer is here which means the outdoor concert season is in full-affect. And while it’s important that you look cute while rockin’ out to your favorite band, it’s equally important that you sport all the right gear—summer outdoor concerts are unpredictable and you need to be prepared for anything, even some pesky rain. With that said, no matter what your style is or who you’re going to see live, below is a list of essential accessories every concert-goer needs to make the perfect (and smart) outfit.

Head Gear/Eye Wear
If you are attending a summer outdoor concert the most important thing you want to do is take care of your skin and eyes from the harsh sun rays. A good way to look stylish while protecting yourself from getting a sunburn is to make sure you wear any of these items:

  • Straw Fedora—Anything made of wicker or straw is the ideal accessory to have this summer, but nothing says your ready to rock out more than wearing a straw fedora. Just about every store carries them and they’re rather inexpensive, like this $18 one sold at Nordstroms or this bargain $8 one from the Gap.
  • Fashion Scarves—We know what you’re thinking: it’s going to be way too hot to wear fashion neck scarves, even the ones that are made of light material. But wearing a head scarf, on the other hand, can help keep the sweat out of you face and keep your hair and away from your neck while giving your outfit some extra flare, like this one from Urban Outfitters.
  • Vintage Eye glasses—Yes, technically the wayfarer style can be seen as “vintage” they are so last year. This summer, it’s all about challenging your inner 50s and 60s, Jackie-O and feline vixen style

Bag Lady

If you don’t have any pockets, you’ll need the perfect bag that will be able to hold all your stuff. The ones listed below should do the trick while simultaneously giving you a fashion-forward edge.

  • Belt Purse—This modern take on the 1980s fanny pack is taking the nation by storm and is the perfect addition to any concert outfit, especially if you’re the type that likes to get up and dance—there’s no annoying strap, it’s light weight so it won’t hold you down and because it’s attached to your hip, you won’t risk accidently leaving your purse somewhere. Anthroplogie’s Lillian Pouch Belt Purse is the less expensive version of other designer belt purses floating around the market, but it’s still just as effective in doing its job: holding the essentials (lip gloss, cellphone, and concert stubs).
  • Cross Body Bag—If a belt purse really isn’t you thing, then at least try to go for a cross body bag, like this one from American Eagle Outfitters. Not only has fringe come back with a vengeance, but like with a purse belt, it too will be glued to your body which means you won’t risk leaving it somewhere or dropping it during a crowd surf.
  • Tote Bag— If you’re the type that like to take a lot of items with you, a tote would be a better choice. But pass on the canvas ones and go for a multi-use tote like a Funtote Carry-Me Eco Bag. It’s large enough for you to stash your blanket, sunscreen and it even has large pockets to hold your water bottle. And the best part? It’s made with water-resistance material so if it happens to rain or you need to get “hosed down,” your cell phone or digital camera won’t get ruined.

Fancy Footwork

Let it be known that heels definitely shouldn’t be your shoe-of-choice when going to an outdoor summer concert, even wedges and sandals are a little risky. This is because you’ll most likely do a lot of walking—your feet will hurt, get exceptionally dirty (even more so if it rains and turns the dirt to mud) and your feet will get stepped on by people twice your size if you’re jumping and dancing anywhere near the main stage. Instead, try some comfy and cute flats that will protect your feet from the outside elements and rowdy crowds like these breathable Chuck Taylor’s made of Mesh, Tapestry Plimsoll Sneakers from Urban Outfitter or some Fleharty’s from Aldo.
