Beauty Tip Tuesday: Reducing foot swelling and pain {and a giveaway!}

Update: the winner is…

In this edition of Beauty Tip Tuesday, we’re talking about foot pain. How many times have you picked out a killer pair of heels, worn them all night (I’m thinking dancing at a wedding reception) and had to take them off halfway through the night because your feet start to swell?

This actually happened to me a few weeks ago at a family wedding reception. Luckily I had packed a pair of flats, but let’s be honest. My flats looked lame with my killer dress compared to my 4 inch heels.

And then I was contacted by a company that claims they can help alleviate this swelling and allow you feet to heel quicker! Imagine: your feet start to swell and you rub some lotion on them and they quickly feel refreshed. That’s pretty much how it works!

Topricin claims their products are “safe, effective, patented homeopathic pain relief and healing creams that contain a combination of natural biomedicines. These medicines relieve pain by stimulating a robust healing response and assist the body’s desire to heal the damage that is causing the pain in joints, nerves and muscles.”

I tried out their Foot Therapy Cream after I spent a workday in heels and then went straight to the gym. Typically, by the time I come home and take off my tennis shoes, my feet are beat. I decided to rub on some of the foot cream and see what happened. I would compare the consistency to many heel-only lotions I’ve used. It’s not as thick as many moisturizing lotions, but it’s a silky texture that soaks in quickly. I actually did feel like my feet were quite rested within about ten minutes of using the cream.

If you’re someone who wears heels all day in a city or stands on your feet all day, I would highly recommend the Foot Therapy Cream.

Looking for other ways to reduce your foot pain from heels? Here are a few Beauty Tip Tuesday tips:

  • Consider high heeled shoes with an “air bag” or very comfortable sole that protects your feet from rubbing and provides shock absorption.
  • Choose to try on shoes at the end of your day, as they swell throughout the day when you stand and walk around.
  • Try on both pairs of shoes, as your feet may not be identical in size and the shoes may not be identical in size as well.
  • Limit your walking and standing when wearing high heels.
  • Stretch tight shoes with shoe stretchers to make them more comfortable.
  • Avoid running in high heels.
  • Massage your legs and feet after wearing high heels.

Topricin also has a few other products for other areas of the body, including knees, elbows and backs. They’ve graciously offered to supply one reader with each of their products!

Beauty Tip Tuesday: How to save on beauty essentials

Today’s Beauty Tip Tuesday is a guest post from Andrea Woroch, a nationally recognized consumers-savings expert.

1. Hair Products
Consider extending the life of your shampoo (and hair color) by using dry shampoo or baby powder in between washes. When using shampoo and conditioner, check out these great tips and best bargain buys from DailyFinance.com.

2. Hand Soap
Foam hand soap is all the rage these days, and one of the easier beauty products to DIY. Refer to EHow.com’s recipe for specific instructions, but ultimately all you need is a lot of water, a bit of soap and a few drops of essential oil.

3. Makeup Brushes
In addition to extending the life on pricey makeup applicators, regularly cleaning your brushes is just the sanitary thing to do. And if you really need replacements, consider a tip given to me by a MAC Cosmetics artist; buy art brushes at craft stores for a fraction of the price!

4. Foundation
Whether you’re a liquid, powder or mineral foundation girl, you can use less of this beauty staple by applying a base before application. The Magic Perfecting Base by L’Oreal is a favorite among top fashion magazines, and is available for less than $12 from Walmart and Target.

5. Fragrance
Let’s be honest — designer fragrances are among the most expensive beauty purchases, with $80 buying less than 6 ounces of product. If you can’t part with your signature Chanel scent, buy gift cards at a discounted rate for retailers selling your fragrance and enjoy immediate savings.

6. Body Lotion
Moisturizing is a must for anyone who wants to avoid the shar pei-look at 50, but lotion gets pricey when you see the words “illuminating,” “firming” or “age-defying” on the label. Unless you have a serious skin issue, consistent use of most drugstore moisturizers is sufficient.

7. Hair Color
Prolong your color-treated hair between salon visits using household ingredients. Brunettes can use a strong pot of cooled coffee and blonds can use a lemon juice-water mixture. Apply the treatment after shampooing, let sit for 15 minutes, then rinse, condition and style as usual.

8. Hair Accessories
Today’s trendy hair accessories can be homemade for a fraction of salon and department store prices. Channel your inner domestic goddess and create one-of-a-kind hair candy with beads, feathers and artificial flowers found in craft stores.

9. Less is More
There’s no need to wear your entire cosmetics collection every day of the week. Consider giving your wallet a break by opting for the basics during mellow workdays or lazy weekends. For tips on how to pull off the “au natural” look, refer to Real Simple’s step-by-step instructions.

Beauty Tip Tuesday: Skindinavia Makeup Finish Review

I’m excited to start a new theme called Beauty Tip Tuesday. Each Tuesday (or as I have products and tips to talk about) I’ll be writing about the latest in beauty products.

Today, I’m excited to share a new product perfect for you girls (read: me) with oily faces – Skindinavia No More Shine Makeup Finish.

I first became interested in finishing products because I have always had trouble with the dreaded shiny face. Whether it’s after a day at the office or a night out, about five or so hours after I apply my makeup my face always starts to look shiny and just not as good. It’s as if my makeup disappears and my face starts shining all over!

I was excited to try a finishing spray but was honestly a little nervous. Would it make my face breakout? Would adding another product actually make my face more oily?

Here’s what the manufacturer says about the product: “Control shine anytime, anywhere, without reapplying your makeup! Ultra-fine mist delivers a healthy looking finish without ever becoming too shiny. No More Shine Makeup Finish stops makeup slippage and caking over the entire face and oil prone t-zone.”

So, what did I think? I actually really liked it! The directions recommend shaking the bottle well and spraying the mist about 4-6 times 8 inches away from your face. I only did like 2 1/2 pumps at arms length. I found that it really did help me keep from getting shiny and after a day at the office and a few drinks, I was pretty impressed with how my makeup looked. 15 hours after first applying, I was starting to look a little shiny but I think it did pretty well. On another day where I have to go right from work to drinks I may try the recommended 4-6 sprays to see how it works.

The one thing I will say is be sure to keep your mouth and eyes shut. While the product is oil and paraben free and formulated for sensitive skin, I got a bit in my mouth and it tasted awful. I can only imagine what it would be like in your eyes.

Retailing at $29 for a four ounce bottle, it’s a little pricy but I see myself only using this for special occasions, not as an every day product.

What finishing products have you tried? Any that you like?

This product was provided for review by the manufacturer. The opinions expressed here are my own.
